living with cancer

This is the one diary I should have kept 14 years ago and one I wish I did not feel the need to keep now. I was diagnosed with bone cancer in 1992 and survived. 2006 and I now have another tumor under investigation: the journey begins again..

Tuesday 15 January 2008 – Yet more negative results

Ordinarily I would be glad to report the return of negative results from the Hospital Xray department, but when you are hoping that they find something that can be tangibly treated then negative is not always good.
I have now been subscribed yet another form of medication, this time Amitriptyline, a type of anti depressant. My GP now believes these ‘old fashioned’ tablets will best reduce the pains I am getting from the scar tissue around the area of the operation I had to remove part of the lung and tumour in 2006. He is working on the premise that I have damaged nerve endings in that region. I am willing to give these a go and I will have to increase the dosage from one tablet to five over a short period of time depending on any side effects. I am to take one at night, increased by one over a three or four day period.
I am not as yet depressed, but I am getting really tetchy, which is unfortunate for my family, but they at least understand, most of the time.

Thursday 10 January 2008 – New Year, same pains

It has now been three weeks since I had the Xray on my spine and I am still awaiting the results. In the meantime, I have ceased taking the anti inflammatory drugs and I am back on painkillers, the same ones I ran out of over the Christmas holiday due to the ineptitude of one of the receptionists at my GPs surgery. Thanks to her I had a bad time between Christmas and New Year with increased pains.
My partner and I have been into my place of work to see the Occupational Health Nurse whom will look into how to best approach my eventual return to work. She will need a report from my GP first, but more importantly I need to have a diagnosis on what is causing the back pains before I even attempt a return to work.
